this is my first time posting one of these things, and to be honest im not completely sure how it works. up until this point, our good friend buske of act:won design has set this thing up for us and updated it a few times with interview, pictures, reviews and such that hes found around. feel free to check some of that shit out.

im going to use this space to update you on some new shit we got coming up - shows, videos, recording news, whatever. i'd imagine this thing could be a lot cooler when were on the road and we can update this thing daily with ignorant ass klipa qoutes.

we just got a new bass player. his name is jared, he also plays in richmond's straight edge DOWN TO NOTHING. he's familiar with the road and an absolute asset to our band. last week, we played our first weekend with jared, and there's no question that he's the perfect fit for us. as for fiacco, who filled in on the dates with terror, he's still living in baltimore. in my basement to me exact. he's definitely hot and definitely single. ladies? :



the jared weekend included shows in buffalo NY, albany NY, and montclair NJ. all of which were a great time. literally all 3 dates were incredible; good promoters, good crowd, great atmosphere. thanks to anyone who got buck nasty in the pit. 2 of the shows were in celebration of the release of records by buffalo's rhinocerus, and albany's gaining ground. be sure to check them both out

currently we are, and have been working on an LP to be released somewhat early next year on reaper records. we have been together writing, picking, and choosing exactly the material to represent us, almost daily.

with that said, we won't be playing a ton of shows for the next few weeks. a weekend is booked which will cover NJ, MASS, and possibly CT. also, were planning a southern stream of weekend dates for december. you may know that in january we're doing a US tour with full blown chaos, reign supreme, and dirty money. we'll post dates soon.

REVIEW: Soulcraft08

Nowadays it doesn’t take too much for a band to be described as “hard”: just throw a mosh part here and there, go to the gym, listen to Alpha Omega 24/7, wear an OG Cro-Mags shirt on stage and create your hype. Anyway, there’s a huge difference between this and being really hard. Well, not a lot of bands around these days deserve this description, but Trapped Under Ice are undoubtedly one of them! I must admit it did take me some time to get into this band, but once you realize what this band is all about you’ll just love them. This Baltimore band gained a lot of popularity during the last months, and that’s what they deserve, for the amazing blend of NYHC that falls somewhere between Breakdown and Crown of Thornz is just brutality at its best. The 6 songs featured on “Stay Cold”, topped with one of the best artwork seen to date, will be the soundtrack to some pretty bad violence at their live shows. Once again Kitzel’s Reaper Records comes out with an amazing release!

EXCERPT: Mind Over Matter blog

Mind Over Matter is a blog done by the singer of Belgian hardcore band, Rise And Fall. He had some nice things and very appreciated things to day in a recent blog entry about TUI. Check it out. Thanks, Bjorn.

One of the most exciting bands in hardcore these days is definitely Trapped Under Ice. That band is so ill. They are currently wrapping up their European tour and I would definitely advise you to go see them if you can. After that they have a full U.S. tour coming up with Terror. Talk about an awesome package. Their most recent EP on Reaper Records called "Stay Cold" is filled with well crafted, hard and sincere hardcore with a lot of groove. Crown Of Thornz and Breakdown are definitely references, yet it doesn't quite stop there. There's more to their sound and whatever it is, it's got a lot of people hooked. I love how a lot of older heads are super stoked on this band. I feel like this is one of those bands that could bring a lot of different types of hardcore kids to shows, in the same way that a band like American Nightmare did a few years ago. Either way, both lyrically and musically this band soars high, I hope to see more of them in the future.

REVIEW: Aversion Online

The latest from the always awesome Reaper Records is the "Stay Cold" EP from Baltimore, MD's Trapped Under Ice, by far one of the best new metallic hardcore bands out there these days. And I've been eagerly awaiting the CD release of this EP 'cause it also contains their 2007 demo as bonus tracks (as well as a handful of live tracks and a dub version of "Evelyn" by Black Ark, but it's basically the studio material that I'm all about). Utilizing straightforward hardcore power chord rhythms and chunky NYHC styled breakdowns with tiny little doses of added metallic flare, quick lead breaks, and occasional flirtations with sparse melody (think Betrayed) doesn't exactly appear innovative on paper, and I'm not really saying these guys are rewriting the book or anything, but they're not so typical either. I'm not entirely sure what it is about 'em, but it's more of a big picture thing: The vocal approach and the lyrics, the way they keep the metal influence way under control, the sense of groove and its balance with the melodic undercurrents, and also the fact that all of the songs are so short - leaving no room for senseless repetition or noodling around. So, yeah, I don't need to analyze this shit. It's great material and there's a reason this band's getting a decent amount of "hype" or whatever, so… if you've never heard 'em before, absolutely check 'em out. I can't wait to hear more from these cats…

So stoked. This album completely blew my mind. I have been listening to it non-stop since last night. 6 tracks of non-stop energy, I can’t stop dancing and singing along with it while cruising around in my truck. People give me strange looks sitting at red lights as I’m enjoying the recent warm weather with my windows down singing along, “SO ALONE! SO ALONE! STAY COLD! YOU CAN’T HURT ME ANYMORE! STAY COLD! YOU WON’T HURT ME ANYMORE!”

INTERVIEW: I'm Not Sure blog

I'm Not Sure: Could you state your name and position in the band?

Justice: my name is justice and i sing in trapped under ice.


INS: Trapped Under Ice have unique lyrics for a hardcore band, What do they mean to you on a personal level?

J: our lyrics represent nothing more than the honest feelings of a young person. being young can mean a lot of things, sometimes im angry, sometimes afraid, sometimes insecure, etc. i try to be as real as i possibly can, without exception. i would think that is why a lot of people can relate to our lyrics.

INS: Last night while I was washing dishes at work, I was listening to the "Stay Cold" ep. My manager, who is a total stoner, said that it reminded him of Metallica back in the day and was totally digging it. Where does that crossover influence come from?

J: literally everyone in our band is a huge metallica fan. while we've never aimed to sound anything like metallica, it's inevitable that we would possess those qualities. but realistically, who doesn't love metallica?


INS: My manager then asked me who I was listening to, and I said "Trapped Under Ice". He then went on into how that is the name of a Metallica song. Is that where you guys got the name?

J: your manager sounds awesome. trapped under ice is a metallica song, though we didn't consciously take from it. i think it's just one of those things where some of us are so familiar with the band, someone mentioned that as a name idea and we were into. i week later everyone was asking "you guys sound like metallica?"


INS: How is it that you think you guys blew up so big off of the demo?

J: ill let you know when we blow up haha. i think we did a lot of things with the demo that a lot of bands aren't doing right now. it's influenced by bands that maybe a lot of people aren't influenced by right now. like i said, the lyrics are honest, and i think people can spot that kind of thing. we had fun with making the music as well as the artwork. when we designed the art work a lot of people were like "are you serious!?" or "that's stupid". but like my friend patrick from reaper records has told me plenty of times, nobody decides what's acceptable or cool in hardcore, but it's what you make of it. we wanted to make a sound and a record design that was something we wanted. something that reminded me of the time when i was first introduced to hardcore. the demo is a lot of things that i loved when i was 14 and still now.


INS: Here's a broad question... What are you stoked on right now?

J: im stoked on so many things right now. just a few months ago i quit my job to make the band a more full time thing. i love tour, and we've been doing a lot of it, and have plenty of tour ahead of us. im stoked on reaper records. it's great to have someone who has as much faith in us as reaper does. it's good to have someone believe in you and do anything to support you. so many great bands together at this moment. im stoked on the baltimore hardcore scene. it's got a great history and a great future. lots of new bands that you will be seeing for the next few years. stoked to go to europe and be doing a split with london's dirty money. them and dead and gone records have worked really hard to get us to europe. they're also coming to the US to visit in january. it's going to be an awesome tour. mostly, im stoked to see so many young people so active in the hardcore community; bookings shows, doing zines, attending shows.


INS: What's the best part about being in Trapped Under Ice?

J: i spend my time traveling with my best friends. making new friends always. legitimate good friends all over this country and now in new countries. i love getting to be my complete true self and being accepted for it.

Straight out of the port city of Baltimore, Maryland comes the vicious monster known as Trapped Under Ice. Obvious influences from New York powerhouses Breakdown and Crown of Thorns, the city of Baltimore quickly inherits one of the most brutal outfits to come out of the b-more area in recent memory. In 2007, Trapped Under Ice released a five song demo , which was later released as an EP on a label named Flatspot Records. This EP soon caught the attention of many in the hardcore community. Soon there after, Reaper Records heard the tracks and immediately began working out a deal to record the new onslaught that is known as the "Stay Cold" EP.

Trapped Under Ice have gained a huge amount of recognition in the past year or so due to the band enlightening their NYHC fan base to a more sweet and finesse sound that they posses. Musically very heavy, and in place are tighter, more unique jams than their previous five song demo effort that was released in 2007. Relentless music with potent guitar work shine throughout this record from beginning to end. The vocals are well-paced and the vocalist has a distinct voice which complements his array of delivery.

Arguably, "Stay Cold" has sent shock waves through the country since it's release on May 6th. One of those records that clocks in under ten minutes, leaving you wanting more of the ultimate riffage that Trapped Under Ice display. This is the way hardcore is meant to be played. Pissed off, brutal and devastating all in one blow. The band also displays a love for the road, already completing a successful tour with friends in Trash Talk. Stand out tracks on this 7" are as followed: Skeleton Heads, Street Lights and Between the Sheets. The only issue noticeable in this EP is the choice to end with the closer of "Between the Sheets." "Skeleton Heads," with it's hard hitting "Nishinga Motherfucker" break would of been the icing on the cake and made for a better closer to the record. Other than that, this album is relentless from start to finish and should content for best EP of the year. If your a fan of straight up old school hardcore, this is a sweet piece of wax to add to the collection.

Being a fan of the greatest dramatic television show of all time, "The Wire," anything coming out of Baltimore, MD is going to pique my interest. Couple that with Pulling Teeth leading the charge for the suddenly insanely strong Baltimore hardcore scene and it's no surprise that Trapped Under Ice has gained a huge amount of recognition in the past year flying clearly under the flag of their home city. While this “cool by association” of their city vibe could theoretically be a bad thing, it simply doesn’t matter because with Stay Cold, Trapped Under Ice proves they are an emotional and well-rounded hardcore band that would make waves no matter where they hailed from.

Following up their promising 7” demo, Stay Cold finds the band refining their NYHC base to a fresher and more polished sound. Gone are the clear musical allusions to Biohazard and in its place are cleaner and tighter tracks that let the guitar work shine and showcase the interesting street-conscious lyrical content. While mentions of these aspects will no doubt turn-off ‘Org readers that belittle most hardcore as tough-guy-meathead-violence-garbage, Trapped Under Ice shows that succinct heavy music with urban themes can actually be intelligent and musically satisfying.

The standout aspects of this band are definitely the guitar work and the vocals, both individually and in the interplay between them. Whoever writes the guitar parts in this band is a riff machine and I enjoy that fact that all the parts have more than just solid hardcore groove but are also pleasingly melodic. Over-top that, the vocals are well-paced and the vocalist has a very individual sound to his attack, sometimes pronouncing words in strange ways that is likely a symptom of his heartfelt delivery. What might be his secret weapon, however, is that he knows exactly his place in the music. He knows not to shout over the best riffs and works his words into the right spots between the guitar accents. For an example of this, check out the vocal and guitar interaction on side two opener “Street Lights,” and on the last track, “Between the Sheets,” where a minute and a half of solid riffing goes by before the vocals come in for just the last 20 seconds. In the over-the-top world of hardcore, restraint can be a powerful tool.

As much as I like the “Between the Sheets”, I do find it to be a strange closer for this EP. While most of the moments on this recording have a clear purpose, the sudden ending here is confusing. I think “Skeleton Heads” with its “Nishinga, motherfucker” break would have made for a better closer, but that complaint is nitpicky at best. All sequencing issues aside, this is a solid release and will likely be a contender for best EP of the year on my list and likely many other people’s as well.

TOUR UPDATE: London, UK

So, we haven't actually played any shows yet, but we made it to London yesterday. It's been a blast so far. We're staying with Dirty Money, they are some real wild ass dudes. Today, Rob challenged a group of 5 or 6 men for calling him, "four eyes", before punching one of them out. The city is great and full of interesting people that actually remind me a lot of certain personalities in Baltimore. The next couple weeks should be good. Can't wait to get to know Europe and meet up with some friends in American bands. If you're a fool and have yet to do so, check out the song from our upcoming split with Dirty Money.

INTERVIEW: Stuck In The City

Trapped Under Ice are a five piece band from Baltimore, Maryland. In my opinion their new record is one of the best out so far this year. After they played here on June 1st, Vik (SITC Crew) did an interview with them about how shit’s been goin’ lately. They talk about naked chicks and dogs more than your average hardcore interview. SITC: First off: Who are you, what do you do and why do you do it?

Ben: I play drums. I’m Ben.
Justice: I’m Justice and I sing because I’ve got somethin’ to say. Nah…

SITC: Stay Cold, a month later, is being repressed, did you think it was going to be that succesful?

Justice: I was so surprised by the success of the record. I mean… I did think it would get a repressing but it was sold out before the street date and I had no idea that was gonna happen. It’s kind of a cool thing but it’s kind of a bummer because we’ve done a lot of shows without any records, for the last maybe month, where we could’ve had records with us. But we have a second pressing that’ll be out in, I think, two weeks and we have a cd version coming out with, that includes the demo and some live tracks…bonus tracks… shit like that.
SITC: Got a DVD with that?
Justice: Nah, that’d be awesome but nah… we’ve got a music video some place on the internet.
SITC: Yeah I saw that… with the naked chick right?
Justice: What’d you think?
SITC: She was alright.
Justice: Not the naked chick man! I’m talkin about the video!
SITC: Oh the video!
Justice: The naked chick’s alright!
SITC: As a semi-married guy… it was nice. You don’t see that many tits and ass in hardcore videos that often. But yo it was cool. I thought it was cool. I liked the whole black and white thing. The reactions were… Do you get reactions like this everywhere?
Justice: Uh… it depends. I mean, those scenes in the video were shot in our hometown and… you know, different Baltimore venues and kids are just really supportive of us and every show’s pretty crazy to me. (to Ben) How do you feel?
SITC: Do you get this reaction… First of all what’d you think of the reaction tonight?
Ben: Great. Canada’s been really good to us.

SITC: So what, third show in Canada?

Ben: Third, yeah.
Justice: We played Quebec City and that was fuckin phenomenal. I never thought that I would play a city where lots of dudes are singin’ a long to lyrics I sing where at the same time there were dudes singing along in not english.
SITC: They have no idea… Honestly, there’s maybe 20% that know exactly what you’re sayin’.
Justice: It’s not even that they were speaking French but they were speaking the noises that I make and that was so cool cause they were anunciating the words. That’s cool as shit that our music has reached people on that level. And we played Montreal yesterday and it was phenomenal. The scene there is just incredible. People were so good to us. We partied. We had a good time. The show was just such a positive vibe. Everybody’s havin’ a good time gettin’ involved. Nobody got hurt. No attitudes. They took good care of us. Dan Edge put this thing together and just took really good care of us.
SITC: Safe to say you’ll be back?
Ben: Absolutely.
Justice: We’ll be back very soon. Lookin’ at September/August we’ll be back.

SITC: Well back to the record, when you set out to write the record, did you want it to be different compared to the demo or was it just trying to add on to it or were you going in a different direction or something like that. How does it compare to the demo?

Justice: Some of the songs were written at the time of the demo. Like the song Street Lights we wrote, maybe, a week or two after we finished writing other songs for the demo. That was in work when the demo came out. I feel like it’s a continuation cause we never really stopped writing. We never really stopped writing but at the same time our sound did evolve so… I’d say it’s a continuation of the demo but with new influences and maybe a little more of a different vibe, more of that on “STAY COLD” . But I feel like it definitely entails what makes us Trapped Under Ice. It has our distinctive sound to it.

SITC: So where do your lyrics come from?

Justice: Well, do you mean situations or do you mean really sitting down with a pen and a paper and trying to put my thoughts on a paper. I don’t really listen to another band or any kind of writer and say “I wanna sound like that writing-wise, I wanna write lyrics like that.” I try to be as honest as I can and put my feelings on paper. There is bands, obviously, that do influence you to some degree whether it’s conscious thought or not. I would say maybe one of those bands is Swans. Really dark lyrics that put me in a good mood for writing music.

SITC: Who’s Evelyn?

Justice: Evelyn… (Justice and Ben laugh) Evelyn is representative of a lot of girls but “Evelyn” is actually our… at the time it was our 15 year old friend, it was his 14 year old girlfriend. She broke up with him and he was all heartbroke. He’s a good little buddy of ours and we turned it into a little joke in the recording studio and threw it in there. So Evelyn is a 14 year old girl.
SITC: From Baltimore?
Justice: South of Baltimore.
Ben: Burnsville.

SITC: So what’s the scene like in Baltimore?

Ben: It’s everywhere…uhhhh… I dunno.
Justice: You can take a second to think.
Ben: Uh, I dunno.
SITC: Lotta new bands right now, or?
Justice: Lotta new bands poppin’ up. And it’s a lot of classic bands. It’s cool. There’s Stout, you know, who are a historic Baltimore band. They’ve been doin’ their thing for awhile now. They’re incredible. Their still doin’ their thing, they’re playing a good amount. They just put out a new record called “Sleep Bitch” and their material, I feel, is up to date while at the same time maintaining the sound they’ve had for so long. As far as the kids, to start off, other bands we’ve got, we’ve got a new band just started called Brick. A good friend of mine, James, he’s singin’ in that band. It’s incredible. It’s kind of got, maybe a little bit of Cro-Mags vibe to it. At the same I’d say Next Step Up, old Baltimore band Next Step Up. Other new bands we got…uh… what other new bands we got?
Klipa: Bad Habit.
Ben: Blind the Thief.
Justice: There’s a band called Blind the Thief. Those are really good kids. They’re always supporting, doin shows. Bad Habit. Another young band doin’ a faster, thrasier sound. Um… New bands you can think of?
Ben: Of course you mentioned Brick right?
Klipa: Neck Deep. Neck Deep. Did you mention Neck Deep man?
Justice: As far as the kids… As far as the kids involved with Baltimore City, it’s cool cause there’s a lot of… all the old dudes who have put their time in and done their thing are still comin’ around. Dudes from Next Step Up… Next Step Up hasn’t been a band in years but those dudes still come out, support us, support Baltimore City hardcore. Like Stout dudes. Fuckin’ (inaudible) random dudes from Gut Instinct. Dom, who’s a Canada dude. He’s from Toronto correct?
SITC: Dom…
Ben: Pulling Teeth.
SITC: Oh Dom. He’s from just around the corner. I wanna say he’s from Brampton.
Justice: Yeah. His band’s doing a lot of things. He’s actually my next door neighbour and he’s been so supportive of us and just been really, really good to us. He was maybe one of their first people to ever say that he had any kind of faith in our band and really go out… and put his hand out to help us. It’s a very supportive scene and… I mean I couldn’t be happier. Every show we play, every show I go to it’s a lot of kids havin’ fun, everybody’s real intense and every show is aggressive. Sometimes I would say maybe a little…
Ben: Too aggressive. Sometimes.
Justice: A little violent sometimes, maybe. But at the same time everybody has a mutual respect for everybody. I think it’s a real good think we’ve got goin on. I feel like if you haven’t been to Baltimore you should check it out.
SITC: The venue’s Ottobar right?
Justice: Yeah, Ottobar.

SITC: Alright so what’s the plan for the LP or what’s next?

Justice: We have a lot of tour coming up. We’re goin’ to Europe. Two weeks. We’re goin’ with a band called Lion of Judah from Maryland and Dirty Money from London. We come back from that. Oh, we’re playin’ Pressure Fest in Germany. A lot of really good shows we’re doin’. We come back from that and we’re goin’ on two months of tour. Not all the dates are confirmed yet but it’s with Terror, Death Before Dishonor, Warriors, CDC. After that we’re lookin’ to write a full length. But we’ve been workin’ on a full length. We’ve got some songs right now bein worked on. When we get back we’re gonna start solidifying some songs and puttin’em down in studio maybe in January.

SITC: Back again to the EP, sorry. But uh, what’s the story behind the… actually nevermind, this is a demo question. What’s the story behind the demo cover?

Justice: I mean, I think that says a lot about us as people. It says a lot about our roots as far as we’re a 90s influenced hardcore band. And I would picture an old New York hardcore demo or an old Baltimore hardcore demo… We just wanted to do something fun and different from what a lot of people are doing right now. We had a lot of fun with it. We went to different little ghetto neighborhoods and shit like that in Baltimore just takin’ pictures in front of basketball courts with dogs and random sketchy shit, you know.
Klipa: And sittin’ on a stoop.
Justice: Yeah sometimes you just gotta take your shirt off and just sit on a stoop you know. I mean that’s how I look typically when I’m on my porch. When people walk by my porch they might see some hard ass dude lookin’ like that. But, we just decided to take a picture of it and put it on a record.
SITC: So you’re a dog guy?
Justice: Oh my god am I a dog guy. I love dogs.
SITC: What kind of dogs do you have? Do you have dogs?
Justice: Yeah I have two dogs. I have an English Bull Terrier, his name’s Spike and I have a Pitbull mix… her name’s Rocky. It’s actually my girlfriend’s dog. She was rescued. I love’em. I actually try and…Whenever we stay with somebody on tour, the first question is “Do you guys got dogs?” I think they think I’m fuckin’ retarded.
SITC: Yeah that sucks. Right now… a lot of places here in Toronto you can’t bring dogs into apartments, especially in the downtown. I wouldn’t want to bring a big dog into a small apartment… Well actually. If you guys were here next weekend, it’s like… we have this huge festival called Woofstock where they shut down all the streets around here and it’s just a big dog festival.
Justice: One time we were in Philly and I saw this dude walking his dog down the street and I always stop everybody to pet their dog. They wouldn’t stop the car. And I was yelling at them “Yo! I like your dog!”. Then he got all offend and he thought I was gonna murder him or some shit and was like “Fuck you asshole!” I just like to stop everybody to pet their dog and they thinks it weird I guess but whatever. Fuck it. I just wanna pet your dog alright. Get over it.

SITC: Alright… Um, alright…just a couple, last couple questions. What do you mean by “Stay Cold”?

Justice: Um, Stay Cold, I mean… the lyrics of the song kind of touch on getting your heart broken and being hurt and staying cold is kind of like… maybe a message to the person I was when I wrote the demo of it. (Something interrupts). I look at it as kind of a message to myself when I wrote the demo you know….
(Dudes were interrupted by a homeless guy trying to sell them a bicycle and laugh and joke about it)
SITC: Fifteen bucks for a bike, you can’t go wrong with that.
Justice: But… Stay Cold is like a message to myself when I wrote the demo. The demo was like… maybe I was a little more vulnerable of a person as to where I feel like I’ve kind of grown up a little bit since then and learned to harden myself to the ways of the world… as corny as that sounds… but you have to stay cold to not let everybody in and be vulnerable to everybody to hurt you. You know? Basically, it’s my advice is to stay cold, be strong, don’t let nobody hurt you, don’t let people walk on you. Whether it’s mind abuse or you know, somebody wants to push you around physically, you gotta stand up for yourself.

SITC: Finally, what are your thoughts on the internet?

Ben: On the internet? I love it. Good and bad. It definitely put us out… you know it helped us out a little bit… you know, it helps every band out but at the same time… a lot of shit… a lot of shit… and ridiculous shit.
Justice: The internet’s done a lot of good things for us. It’s done a lot of good things for a lot of bands. But, at the same time, the internet can take a fake and make’em a hardcore kid. On the internet, any fuckin’ little nerd sittin’ in his house can get on there and talk shit about you know, “Trapped Under Ice say they’re insincere,” or they could say that “Trapped Under Ice…” is fuckin… fuckin… I dunno like “perverts” or I dunno whatever. You know what I mean. But the truth is we’re people that put our asses on the line. I put my life into this and we all do, you know? The internet can say… can make some fuckin’ nerd chillin’ in his mom’s basement a fuckin Krishna hardcore legend. I just think it’s up to people to fuckin’ filter out the real from the unreal and go out… go to hardcore shows, go meet that person. Don’t buy everything you hear… don’t buy everything you read anyway. Go to talk to that person. Find out if they’re true. Don’t be so quick to buy everything you read on the internet. Stay Cold. Stay strong, you know what I mean? Mentally.
